The Project

The YMCA partnered with J-TEK Construction to renovate its locker room facility in Manchester, NH, updating an aging space that experiences heavy daily use. The project required extensive demolition and reconstruction while working around existing locker areas, plumbing, electrical components, mechanical systems, and other building infrastructure.

Because this is a heavily used community fitness facility, the renovation needed to address more than appearance. The rebuilt space needed durable materials, functional changing and wash areas, improved lighting, and finishes capable of handling frequent daily use by YMCA members and staff.

Construction Process

The project began with demolition of the existing locker room finishes. Flooring was removed throughout large portions of the space, and sections of the suspended ceiling were taken down, exposing ductwork, piping, electrical components, and other systems above the ceiling.

With the space opened up, J-TEK coordinated the construction and improvements needed before new finishes could be installed. The progress photos show extensive work taking place around the existing lockers, sink areas, restrooms, ceilings, and mechanical systems while the locker room was rebuilt.

The finishing phase brought the space back together with new durable flooring, reconstructed ceilings, updated lighting, refreshed walls, new benches, updated sink areas and fixtures, and refinished locker areas. The result is a completely refreshed locker room built to handle frequent use while providing YMCA members with a cleaner and more welcoming environment.

Before & During Construction

The photos below show the extent of the work required to transform the YMCA locker room. Existing flooring and ceiling materials were removed, exposing the underlying floor surfaces and the network of ductwork, piping, electrical components, and structural elements above the space.

As demolition progressed, J-TEK worked throughout the locker, changing, sink, and restroom areas to prepare the facility for reconstruction. These progress photos provide a behind-the-scenes look at the amount of commercial construction work that took place before the new flooring, ceilings, lighting, walls, fixtures, and finishes could be installed.

The contrast between the construction photos and completed facility shows how extensively the locker room was transformed, from an aging interior undergoing major demolition to a bright, durable, and updated space ready for daily use.

Finished Project

The completed renovation transformed the YMCA locker room into a bright, clean, and modern space designed for the demands of daily use. New durable flooring extends throughout the facility, while updated ceilings, lighting, wall finishes, sinks, changing areas, benches, and refreshed lockers give the space a completely updated appearance.

By combining extensive reconstruction with durable commercial finishes, J-TEK Construction delivered a locker room that is more functional, easier to maintain, and better suited for a busy fitness and community facility. The renovated space now provides YMCA members and staff with a welcoming environment built to withstand years of high-traffic use.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In many cases, yes, but it depends on the layout of the facility and the extent of the renovation. Work may need to be completed in phases, isolated from occupied areas, or coordinated around facility operations. For heavily used spaces such as YMCA and fitness center locker rooms, planning access, demolition, construction sequencing, and member safety before work begins is especially important.

  • A commercial locker room renovation can involve much more than replacing lockers and finishes. Depending on the condition of the existing space, work may include demolition, flooring replacement, ceiling reconstruction, lighting improvements, wall and changing-area renovations, sinks and plumbing fixtures, benches, locker areas, and interior finish work.

On the YMCA project in Manchester, demolition exposed the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems above the existing ceiling, demonstrating why commercial locker room renovations often require coordination between several different areas of construction.

  • Commercial locker room flooring should be selected for the specific conditions of the facility. Important considerations include moisture exposure, slip resistance, durability, cleaning requirements, and the amount of daily foot traffic.

For busy gyms, fitness centers, and community facilities, the flooring also needs to hold up to frequent use without creating unnecessary maintenance demands for facility staff.

  • Before beginning a locker room renovation, facility owners should evaluate the condition of the existing space as well as how members and staff actually use it. Important considerations include:

    • Traffic flow and changing areas
    • Flooring and moisture exposure
    • Plumbing fixtures and sink areas
    • Lighting and ceilings
    • Accessibility
    • Lockers, benches, and storage
    • Cleaning and maintenance requirements
    • Construction scheduling and facility operations

Looking at the entire space before construction begins can help identify improvements that affect both the appearance and long-term functionality of the locker room.
